World has accepted India’s leadership position in terms of championing measures to mitigate climate change: Javadekar

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has said that the world has accepted India’s leadership position in terms of championing measures to mitigate climate change. He said that India is the only country in the G-20 forum implementing the Paris accord commitments on renewable energy and afforestation. Answering to a question in Rajya Sabha, Mr Javadekar informed that the country is committed to achieve the target of 175 GigaWatt renewable energy by 2022.

He said, the government is also committed to achieve the upscaled target of 450 Gigawatt as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the year 2030. He informed that with the assistance of the private players the government is marching ahead with robust results in terms of production of renewable energy, afforestation and substantial reduction in emissions.

Replying to another question over the avalanche which occurred in the Chamoli district this year, Mr Javadekar informed the house that the government has not sanctioned any new project in the upper ganga region in the recent years. He said, any hydro project in the country is sanctioned only after joint analysis of the Jal Shakti, Environment and the Power Ministry.

Mr Javadekar added that the disaster in the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand cannot be solely attributed to effects of change in climate due to global warming. He said that out of the total 37 thousand glaciers, many recede whereas others augment which is a part of a natural phenomenon. The Environment Minister asserted that technical committees and various institutes of significance are engaged in constantly studying the effect of global warming on the glaciers.
