With 46,164 new cases in 24 hours, India records sharp single-day surge in COVID-19 numbers

India, on Thursday, reported 46,164 new COVID-19 cases. A total of 34,159 recoveries and 607 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said. On Wednesday, the number was 37,593.

With this, the total number of cases in the country has risen to 3,25,58,530, while the total number of recoveries stands at 3,17,88,440.

The total number of active cases in India is 3,33,725. The death toll so far is 4,36,365. According to the government, over 60 crore people have been vaccinated so far. The total number of vaccinated people stands at 60,38,46,475. Of these, 80,40,407 were vaccinated in the last 24 hours.

Sharp rise in active caseload

According to the government data, India’s recovery rate is currently 97.67 per cent. The active caseload in the country witnessed a sharp rise of over 11,000 cases as against Wednesday when the rise was a marginal – 2,776 as compared to the previous day. On Wednesday, the active caseload stood at 3,22,327.

According to the information shared by the Health Ministry on Wednesday, the weekly positivity rate in the country remains below 3 per cent for the last 61 days. As of yesterday, the rate was 1.92 per cent. The daily positivity rate was 2.10 per cent on
