Will be safe against all emerging variants if we follow COVID appropriate behaviour: AIIMS chief

While talking about the threat posed by Delta plus variant, AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria on Thursday said that the people will be safe against all the emerging variants of coronavirus if they follow COVID appropriate behaviour.

“There isn’t much data on Delta plus variant to suggest it’s more infectious, causing more deaths, or has developed significant immune escape mechanism. But if we follow COVID appropriate behaviour, we’ll be safe against any of the emerging variants,” ANI quoted Dr Randeep Guleria, AIIMS Director, as saying.

The AIIMS chief also talked about the mixing of two different vaccines and stressed that more data needs to be analysed before trying a new vaccination strategy.

“More data is needed on mixing of doses, studies show that it may be effective and a little more side effects may be there. But we need more data before we can say that this is a policy that should be tried,” Dr Guleria said.

No Delta plus case in Delhi’

Meanwhile, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain has said that the national capital has not reported any case of Delta plus variant of COVID-19 so far, adding that there is no communication from the Centre to make any special arrangement to deal with it.

A genome sequencing lab to detect the variants of coronavirus will become operational at Lok Nayak Hospital within a week, he said. Adding, another such lab is being created at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences.

“There are several variants of coronavirus, but there are only two ways to protect yourself against it — get vaccinated and use masks. There is no separate communication from the Centre to make special preparations for the Delta plus variant. Also, Delhi has not reported any such cases so far,” Jain said.
