It is believed that Kashmir’s iconic Dal Lake completely froze in the intervening winter of 1962-1963. The lake possibly remained frozen for more than a month as mercury plummeted to unprecedented levels. Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, the last Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, drove a jeep on the frozen Dal Lake, a picture of which splashed across front pages of local and many national newspapers. He was accompanied by a Minister and the Chief Secretary. Bakshi, who had replaced Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in highly dramatic circumstances, was always keen about his popularity among masses within and outside Kashmir.
