WhatsApp India banned over 3 million accounts between June 16-July 31

WhatsApp in a compliance report said it banned over 3 million Indian accounts and 594 grievance reports were received by it between July 16-31.

During the period, the messaging platform banned 3,027,000 WhatsApp accounts as per the compliance report filed by it on Tuesday, according to PTI.

It had earlier said that more than 95% of account suspensions occur due to authorised use of automated or bulk messaging or spam. Globally, it bans around 8 million accounts every month to prevent abuse of its platform.

According to the latest compliance report from WhatsApp, it received 594 user reports spanning across account support (137), ban appeal (316), other support (45), product support (64) and safety (32) during June 16-July 31. During this period, 74 accounts were “actioned”, it added.

It said that “Account Actioned” implies that some remedial measures were taken on the basis of the report. Taking action is either banning an account or restoring a previously banned account based on the complaint.

It said certain reports are reviewed but may not have been ‘actioned’ in cases where the user needed assistance to access their accounts or to use some features, user requested to restore account and the request was denied or if the reported account did not violate the laws of India WhatsApp Terms of Service.

The messaging platform in a statement said its latest report contains details of user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’S own preventive actions to counter abuse of its platform.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said over the years the platform had applied Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, in order to keep its users safe on the platform.”In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, we’ve published our second monthly report for the 46 day period of – 16 June to 31 July,” the spokesperson added.

The new IT rules which came into effect on May 6 stipulate that large digital platforms, with more than 5 million users, publish compliance reports every month mentioning the details of complaints received and action taken.
