Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has stressed on the importance of accessible advanced quality eye care to vast sections of people living on the margins.
Inaugurating the 32nd Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery at Chennai today, Mr. Naidu said that by 2020 there will be approximately 8.25 million population having cataract problems. He said that diabetic retinopathy was the cause of blindness among people between 20 to 64 years.
Expressing concern on the increase number of both rural and urban children prone to myopia because of addiction to video games, mobiles, computers and television, Mr. Naidu underlined the need to handle the problem with a multi-pronged strategy.
The Vice President said that as India has become the diabetes capital of the world with as many as 50 million people suffering from Type 2 diabetes, he urged the need to rise up to the demand of ophthalmologists.
He said that the need of the hour is a multi-pronged strategy for strengthening the preventive and curative eye care.
