Srinagar: Parts of Kashmir Valley received light snowfall on Wednesday night even as local meteorological department predicted wet weather across Jammu and Kashmir, cautioning that it may disrupt transport further on Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only surface link connecting Valley with the rest of the world.

An official from the weather department said that: “We expect light to moderate snowfall from today (evening) at most places of Jammu and Kashmir and some places of Ladakh,” adding that the rains and snow may affect Srinagar Jammu highway especially Banihal -Ramban stretch, which has already witnessed multiple landslides. However, the authorities have closed the highway at Jawahar-Tunnel due to a fresh snowfall on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, the mercury rose in Kashmir last night with Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, recording a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius against minus 5.4 degrees Celsius on the previous night.

Pahalgam, which serves as base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir, witnessed minus 2.7 degrees Celsius. The MeT official said Qazigund the gateway town to the valley in south Kashmir recorded minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, and Kokernag town registered a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.

The ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded the minimum temperature of minus 6.0 and Kupwara was at minus 0.9 degrees Celsius.
