Studies show that vaccinations can help reduce post-Covid hospitalisation by almost 75-80 per cent and bring down oxygen requirement to just 8%, the government said on Friday.
“Studies show that chances of hospitalisation are 75-80% less in vaccinated individuals. The possibility of such individuals needing oxygen support is around 8% and the risk of ICU admission is only 6% in vaccinated people,” Niti Aayog member Dr VK Paul said during a media briefing.
On the Covid situation in India, the government said there has been nearly 85 per cent decline in daily new cases since the highest reported peak on May 7.It said that 78.6 per cent decline has been recorded in total active cases since the peak on May 10.
The government added that as many as 513 districts in the country have a positivity rate of less than 5 per cent.
“We have been witnessing an increase in the recovery rate since May 3, which now stands at 96%. We are seeing a downward trend in active cases. Between June 11-June 17, the overall positivity case was less than 5% in 513 districts,” Union health secretary Luv Agarwal said.
‘Only isolated cases may occur in kids during 3rd wave’
On the impact of Covid on children, Agarwal said that it does not appear that kids will be disproportionately affected in the third wave.
Citing a recent WHO-AIIMS survey, Dr Paul said that seropositivity rate in India is evenly distributed by age groups.WHO-AIIMS survey shows seropositivity in people below and above 18 years of age is almost equal. In those above 18, the seropositivity rate is 67% & 59% in persons below 18. In urban areas, it is 78% in persons below 18 & 79% in above 18,” he said.
Dr Paul added that only isolated cases of infection may occur in children during the third wave.
“In rural areas, the seropositivity rate is 56% in people below 18 years of age & 63% in people above 18. The information show that the children were infected but it was very mild. Only isolated cases of infection may occur in children (during 3rd wave of Covid),” he said.
