The United States called on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to act on his promise to give up nuclear weapons. After briefing U.N. Security Council envoys in New York, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the world has demanded that North Korea takes specific steps toward denuclearization. Urging UN Security Council members to continue upholding sanctions on North Korea, Pompeo said every nation including China and Russia, must continue to enforce sanctions until North Korean leader does so. He urged UN Security Council members to continue upholding sanctions on North Korea. The U.N. Security Council has unanimously boosted sanctions on North Korea since 2006 in a bid to choke off funding for Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The US President Donald Trump had met with Kim, last month, for a summit in Singapore during which the North Korean leader pledged to work towards denuclearization of the peninsula. But, the accord did not spell out a timetable for the process or say how it would be carried out.
