The United States has asked Pakistan to bring Taliban to the negotiating table with the Afghan government through sustained and decisive steps. The top diplomat for South Asia, Alice Wells, after meeting Pakistan’s army chief on Tuesday and holding talks with Afghan leaders in Kabul, returned home.
Talking to reporters in Washington today, Wells said, during her talks with Pakistani officials, she asked Islamabad to expel Taliban leaders and pressed them to negotiate with Kabul. She welcomed positive steps by Pakistan and Afghanistan to improve ties, however, she said Pakistan needs to take political initiatives to help drive an Afghan peace process.
Trump administration suspended security assistance to Pakistan in January over its failure to crack down on Afghan Taliban on its soil.
