Whatever may be the reason behind the comment on CAA made by Gen. Bipin Rawat, COAS, it was totally unwarranted and out of place.
It is no wonder that a large segment of the military veteran community, including those who retired in an equivalent rank as his, have criticised the statement for its political overtones.
What he has said has caused considerable pain and embarrassment to the community of soldiers, who put great value to the apolitical credentials of the Armed Forces .
That he has said so in the last week of his tenure as COAS precludes any argument of it being an “off the cuff” remark. Surely by now he would know what a COAS should say and what he should not say.
Has the statement been made with an intention of firming up his candidature a CDS? If so, then he has lowered the stature of CDS even before getting the post.
Spoken reputation is of great value when a person is being selected for appointment on a senior post in Government. The incumbent Government is known o seek advice from ground experts for selection of candidates for important positions. One wonders if such an exercise is being carried out in appointment of senior military commanders!
There are enough senior veterans aligned with the RSS and the BJP to render sound advice, their experience should be put to use!
What has happened is very sad indeed!
