Srinagar: Two militants were killed in a gunfight with the security forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday, police said.
A police official said a joint team of army, SOG and CRPF personnel launched a search operation in Meemender village, on the outskirts of town around 5 am following credible inputs about the presence of militants.
He said the militants opened fire on the forces as the operation was in progress.
The forces, according to the official, returned the fire, triggering an encounter.
A police spokesman said two militants affiliated with Jaish-e-Muhammad were killed in the gunfight. “Two Jaish militants were killed in the gunfight. Arms and ammunition were recovered. Searches are going on,” he said.
