Vintage Kashmir

The raiders who shaped the history

No one knows what would have been the political future of Jammu and Kashmir if the gang of Pakistani Pashtun tribesmen had not attacked the state in October 1947. The Hindu ruler of Muslim majority State, Maharaja Hari Singh was highly undecided on staying Independent or joining India or Pakistan. The tribal raiders created a situation that he had to seek military support from India, which would not come in absence of Jammu and Kashmir legally being part of India. It was in the situation of chaos triggered by the tribal raid that the Maharaja acceded to India and that is how an event in the troubled history was shaped | TheDispatch
