Sushant Singh Rajput death anniversary: Fans still waiting for closure

  • CBI is yet to conclude their case
  • There were two state police and three national investigating agencies on the case
  • Sushant’s death coverage is said to be the among most insensitive and cringeworthy news coverage by TV media showing zero respect for the deceased

The afternoon of June 14, 2020, came as a shock to everyone when the news of a promising and bright actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death came. Rajput, who not only was a brilliant actor, but was also good at the academic front had allegedly committed suicide.

Initially, Mumbai police said that the actor was battling depression and undergoing treatment for the same but in the past few months, he stopped taking his medication and eventually committed suicide.

Sushant’s death gave rise to debates like nepotism in Bollywood, Bollywood biggies bullying the ‘outsiders’ and newcomers. Mumbai police questioned Aditya Chopra, Mahesh Bhatt, Sanjay Leeela Bhansali, Rhea Chakraborty and many more. Nothing significant happened for over one and a half months and it looked like everyone was moving on from this news.

But it was in July-end that Sushant’s family claimed that it was his live-in partner Rhea Chakraborty and her family who forced Sushant to commit suicide. Despite the case being investigated by Mumbai police, Sushant’s father filed an FIR of abetment to suicide against Rhea Chakraborty and her family in Patna and accused her of forcing his son to commit suicide for his money. He claimed that Rhea was using Sushant for money and to advance her own career in Bollywood, giving him drugs and was keeping him away from his family.

After this, a major investigation began spanning two state police, the Centre, Maharashtra government and various sections of Bollywood. The absolutely cringeworthy media coverage was almost impossible to fathom. Many organisations, political parties and Bollywood personalities used Sushant’s death for their own benefit and popularity. Mumbai police was critised for saving Rhea Chakraborty. The seniors of Mumbai police denied all such claims. Demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry grew louder.

Finally in August 2020, the Supreme Court said that CBI will investigate the Patna police FIR. CBI teams reached Mumbai and the city witnessed mad car chase segments by TV media for several days. CBI questioned Rhea, her family and other accused for days, but after almost a year, CBI has not given any conclusion in the case so far.

In the meantime, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) started looking into the allegations of Sushant’s father that Rhea siphoned Rs 15 crore from Sushant’s bank account. Later, ED also said that there are no tracks of Sushant’s money going into Rhea’s, her family’s, or any other account which is connected to Rhea in anyway.

While CBI and ED were doing their investigation, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) started looking into the allegations that Rhea and her brother were procuring drugs for Sushant and giving it to him without him knowing about them. NCB arrested Rhea and her brother Showik Chakraborty on the basis of some WhatsApp conversations about drug procurement. NCB also said both Rhea and Showik confessed to the crime but Rhea and Showik told the court that the confession was forced out of them. NCB didn’t find any drugs in multiple raids at Rhea’s house. Rhea and Showik are now out on bail.

Rhea Chakraborty’s case was of an accused that was dealth with extreme insensitivity by media and social media. She suddenly became the national villian. Now it’s almost an year, till date no central investigating agency has found anything concrete against her, but her character assassination and witch-hunting still continue. There are multiple conspiracy theories making rounds, but in terms of investigation, there are no evidences to prove any of these conspiracy theories. Actress Kangana Ranaut appeared on many television interviews and spoke about Sushant’s death. Though in the maximum portion of all her interviews, she was seen talking about herself. She claimed to have evidences, but she till date hasn’t submitted anything to the CBI.

Those seeking justice for their favourite actor had pinned their hopes on CBI but to date, the agency hasn’t concluded their case.
