Supreme Court to begin hearing pleas challenging Section 377

Supreme Court will today begin hearing pleas challenging Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises homosexuality.

A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra will hear bunch of petitions by 35 individuals challenging Section 377. The apex court yesterday refused to delay today’s hearing after Centre requested for more time to file its response to the petitions.

The court said, the matter has been pending for a while and the Centre should have filed its response by now. Earlier, in 2009, Delhi High Court had decriminalised Section 377, but the order was later set aside by a Supreme Court bench.
