The Supreme Court is today hearing the pleas challenging Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises homosexuality.
A five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, is hearing a bunch of petitions by 35 individuals challenging Section 377. The apex court yesterday refused to delay today’s hearing after the Centre requested for more time to file its response to the petitions.
The court said, the matter has been pending for a while and the Centre should have filed its response by now. In 2009, the Delhi High Court had decriminalised Section 377, but the order was later set aside by an apex court bench.
