Srinagar, Feb 26: Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, remained stranded for the second day on Tuesday following closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway due to continued landslides and shooting stones, triggered by rain at several places and fresh snowfall on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel.
Meanwhile, the historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region besides 43-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, the only road linking Ladakh region with Kashmir remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, which had left Kashmir for Jammu on Monday, are stranded on the highway due to fresh landslides and continued shooting stones between Ramban and Ramsu, official sources said. Passengers stranded on the highway have been shifted to Jamia Masjid Magarkote and other residential areas between Ramban and Ramsu, they said adding there was no arrangement from the administration.
They said similarly over 400 oil tanks and trucks carrying essentials for Kashmir also remained stranded at different places on the highway, resulting in shortage of essentials, particularly petrol, diesel and vegetables.
Meanwhile, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Beacon, responsible for the maintenance of the highway, have already started road clearance operation to put through the road. However, at some places the landslide clearance operation could not be stopped due to continued shooting stones. Two persons were injured in the shooting stones who were referred to Srinagar hospital by a local hospital at Ramban.
Sources said once the road is put through only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards their respective destinations before allowing any fresh traffic. They said the highway has become unpredictable as shooting stones and landslides could occur anytime. During this month the highway remained closed for most period affecting normal movement of traffic.
