GANGTOK: A major avalanche in Sikkim’s Nathula area killed as many as six tourists while leaving 11 others injured on Tuesday, even as rescue and clearance operations continued at Nathula along the border with China.

The avalanche occurred early Tuesday morning at the 14th milestone on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, trapping around 25 to 30 tourists, the defence officials said.

The Border Roads Organisation launched rescue operation and pulled out as many as 22 people.

Six of them were found dead while 11 injured were shifted to the state capital Gangtok’s hospital.

Nathula Pass is a major tourist destination because of its scenic beauty.

Around 350 people along with 75 vehicles stranded on the road were also brought back.
