SRINAGAR: In a significant development regarding Article 370, the Supreme Court of India Tuesday raised questions about the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) amid the ongoing day-to-day proceedings.
According to the court’s inquiry prompted Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to provide insights into the matter, emphasizing that the status of Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory (UT) is ‘not permanent’ and that statehood will be reinstated once ‘normalcy’ returns.
The matter was brought to the attention of a five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court led by incumbent CJI D.Y Chandrachud. He further conveyed that “once the situation normalizes, the government is committed to restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s status as a state.”
