SAMBA: Creation of employment, contributing to the progress of the region through industries and steering the youth into the right direction are the key areas of focus for Abhishek Sharma, who, on Friday, assumed charge as Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Samba.

Abhishek, who has become the youngest officer to be appointed the DC of Samba, incidentally the youngest district of the Jammu, has taken over from Anuradha Gupta.

“I will strive my best to deliver on all fronts and add to the unparalleled progress and development that Samba district has witnessed in the recent years. I will ensure that I do justice to the faith that the administration has shown in me,” said Abhishek, while talking exclusively to The Dispatch.

While service of people of Samba remains at the top of Abhishek’s agenda in his new role, the young officer said that he will be focussing on creation of employment in the district.

“There are a number of potential avenues in the area which are to be explored so that the youth of Samba get jobs, besides strengthening of entrepreneurship sector. Besides, the UT administration is already projecting Samba as ‘the place to be’ for the potential industrialists and investors. I will be taking the mission forward,” said Abhishek, adding that a comprehensive plan will be formulated to eradicate the menace of drug abuse.

Earlier in the day, Abhishek chaired an introductory meeting with the district officers and sub-ordinate staff in the meeting hall of the DC office.

Speaking at the meeting, the DC exhorted officers and field functionaries to work with added dedication and honesty to take the present developmental scenario of the district to its higher levels.

The DC sought co-operation and commitment from all district officers to take the development profile of the district to zenith. He said “Our thrust should be on close monitoring of developmental works and welfare programmes at all levels and ensure resolution of the public issues in a time bound manner.”

The DC also highlighted priorities for the district, including the identification and eradication of drug hotspots and ensuring border security. He further emphasized the government’s priority sectors such as digital literacy, self-employment and e- governance, and stressed the importance of a people-friendly administration.
