Punjab CM Amarinder Singh to dedicate new Jallianwala Bagh memorial today

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh is scheduled to visit Amritsar today to inaugurate a new Shaheed Memorial at Jallianwala Bagh.

A ceremony will be held during which Singh will inaugurate the memorial erected in memory of the martyrs of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar, and dedicate it to the people of Punjab.

The memorial is located 6 km away from the original Jallianwala Bagh Memorial near the Golden Temple. The new memorial cost the state govt Rs 3.52 crore and is spread over 4,490 sq m at Ranjit Avenue in the holy city.

It has been named ‘Jallianwala Bagh Centenary Memorial Park’.

According to reports, journalists will be taken by bus to the ceremony for coverage due to security reasons. Apart from the buses, no journalist will be permitted to reach the venue.

Admission to the ceremony will be available only on the identity cards issued by the Public Relations Department.

The Punjab Police is on its toes in view of Independence Day to avoid any mishap during the August 15 celebrations.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab has slammed Captain Amarinder Singh for inaugurating a new Shaheed memorial rather than renovating the old structure.

BJP’s Shwait Malik, a trustee, Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust, said instead of erecting a new memorial, the CM could have contributed the money towards the renovation of the original memorial.

“How can a memorial be transferred to a fictitious site? The massacre took place at Jallianwala Bagh, not at the Ranjit Avenue park,” he said.
