Prof Soz condemns arrest of mainstream political leaders in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 16: Condemning incarceration of mainstream political leaders of Kashmir, senior Congress leader and former Union minister Prof Saifuddin Soz on Saturday alleged that it has become a routine for the Union Territory (UT) administration to arrest these leaders off and on.

In a statement here this afternoon Prof Soz said notice may be taken of senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Naeem Akhtar who had been taken into custody months ago.

Of late, Mr Akhtar had been lodged in MLA’s Hostel, Srinagar, he said adding now, when his health deteriorated, he was hospitalized for treatment.

Senior Congress leader said it is extremely deplorable that even when his health has deteriorated, he continues to be under detention. Knowledgeable sources have confirmed that after treatment in the  hospital, he has again been kept under detention, Prof Soz claimed.

This attitude of the UT Administration is extremely deplorable, he said adding that the people want to know the reason why it has become necessary  to keep Mr Akhtar under detention even when he is not in good health.

The people of Kashmir rightly condemn the detention of Akhtar even when he is not well, the statement said.
