SRINAGAR: The department- related parliamentary standing committee on Home Affairs has expressed disappointment over the non-furnishing of action taken report (ATR) by the Government of India on its recommendation for extending the relief and financial assistance to the people living in the Turtuk village, which was part of Pakistan till 1971.

In its report, the committee has expressed disappointment over the fact that no reply has been furnished on the action taken for extending the relief and financial assistance to the people living in the Turtuk village under the scheme “relief and rehabilitation for migrants and repatriates”.

In its earlier report, the committee recommended that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) may consider extending the relief and financial assistance to the people living in Turtuk under the scheme of “relief and rehabilitation for migrants and repatriates‟.

“The committee observes that when Turtuk became part of India in 1971, the families have left their land which was on the other side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and, therefore, is deprived of livelihood and is living under poverty,” read the report.

In its ATR, the Ministry of Home Affairs submitted that assistance to the border villages including Turtuk is being provided under different schemes.

After going through the reply of MHA, the committee reiterated its earlier recommendation for extending the relief and financial assistance to the people of Turtuk. Turtuk is an area in the Nubra valley of Ladakh Union Territory and was administered by Pakistan till 1971—(KNO)
