NHRC issues notices to Centre, States and UTs over alleged denial of benefits during COVID-19 pandemic

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to the Centre, States and UTs over alleged denial of benefits during COVID-19 pandemic under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojna and other schemes under the Integral Management of Public Distribution System due to non completion of biometric authentication. Taking cognizance of a complaint in this regard, the Commission has asked the Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution and the Chief Secretaries and Administrators of all the States UTs to submit reports within four weeks in this regard.

They have been directed to send reports on the action taken regarding the issue of problematic biometric authentication. The NHRC has also specifically directed the Chief Secretary, Mizoram to submit action taken report within one week on the alleged denial of benefits to the Chakma Villagers  of the Chakma Autonomous District Council under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojna despite having the Aadhaar Cards or Ration Cards.
