Srinagar was one of the first places in India to have a modern cinema hall. This dates back to early 1930s. Between 1950s and 1980s movie watching was a great trend in Kashmir as small cinema also came up in other towns of the Valley. With the rise of militant insurgency in 1980s, cinemas were shutdown under radical diktats. Some cinemas have been recently revived to great public reception.
