The Congress party is likely to finalise the name of new Chief Minister of Punjab by tonight or Sunday morning, sources said this evening.
“AICC observers (Ajay Maken and Harish Chaudhary) will stay in Chandigarh and next Punjab CM will be finalized by tonight or tomorrow morning,” ANI reported, quoting sources.
Congress veteran leader Amarinder Singh on Saturday resigned as the chief minister of Punjab, amid political crisis in the ruling party in the state slated to go for elections in just about four months.
Since Singh’s resignation, several names of probable candidates have been doing the rounds for the Chief Minister’s post.
As per sources, Sunil Jakhar, former PCC chief, is being considered as the top candidate for the Singh’s replacement. Jakhar, who is not an MLA, is believed to be close to the top leadership.
Ambika Soni and Vijay Inder Singla are the other probable names for the CM post.
However, the Congress will not contest the upcoming Assembly polls under the leadership of new chief minister, said sources.
Punjab Congress president and Amarinder Singh’s in-house rival Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is eyeing the chief minister’s chair, however, is unlikely to get the top post.
