National Road Safety Board: India finally sets up lead agency for road safety

Folks, we have some really, really important news for you! India has finally set up the head agency for road safety in the country: National Road Safety Board. This really is a HUGE step towards ensuring better standards of road safety in the country. By the way, if you are unsure what India’s National Road Safety Board is about, think of it as our version of the US’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Anyway, on Monday the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recently notified the constitution of the National Road Safety Board, which will now serve function as the primary national agency tasked with responsibility of ensuring road safety in the country and other relevant matters.

MoRTH’s notification informing of NRSB’s existence has been a long time coming, especially since the government provisioned for the establishment of such an agency in the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act of 2019.

The notification also explained the Board’s chairman as well as members will be appointed by the Central government and will be required to possess special knowledge of or professional experience in administration, road safety, urban planning, law, traffic management and regulation, health and advocacy, enforcement and investigation, transport engineering, insurance, automobile engineering, civil engineering, and public transport. Furthermore, the Board serve as an advisory and offer put recommendations and proposals for the Central government. The agency will also be able to constitute Technical Working Groups, which will be charged with the responsibility for traffic management; crash investigation and forensics; inspection and certification of vehicles already in use; driving skill testing; etc.
