Nagaland CM hits out at Shashi Tharoor’s ‘outlandish’ headgear remark on PM Modi

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi wearing Naga headgear has drawn flak from Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Naga Hoho.

Reacting to Mr Tharoor’s remark that referred to Naga headgear as outlandish, chief minister Rio said, Nagas have rich heritage and vibrant culture and they are proud of their history and traditions.

In a tweet, Mr Rio said the Naga headgear is renowned & gifted with honour, and is definitely not outlandish. Nagaland CM said, Mr Tharoor must apologise and withdraw statements that hurt others sentiments.

In a separate statement, the Naga Hoho also asked Mr Tharoor to tender an unconditional apology to the Naga people for mocking their traditional attire.

They said, Mr Tharoor’s statement shows the contemptuous mentality of some of mainstream Indians towards the Northeast and in particular the Nagas.
