28 years ago I had appeared for the first time before J&K High Court on 21.11.1991 (Thursday). This was my first ever appearance before any court after having been enrolled as an advocate on 19.11.1991. I still remember that my first case was the petition for pension filed by a soldier who had participated in World War II in Egypt and was a recepient of Burma Star and Victoria Cross. He had been discharged in 1954 by the Indian Army and due to some fake grounds had been deprived of his pension. We lost the writ but ultimately won that case in DB appeal, and it was in 2003 after his death in the meantime! And let me tell you that after his family got arrears of pension, his son who too had retired from army by that time came to meet me at my home. I was not there. He left a sealed envelope in my home. And when I reached my home and opened the envelpoe, I found some reward money with a hand written note from the son that his father had executed a will and as per that will, a certain amount was to be given to his lawyer (me) on receipt of the arrears from army! Such was the character of that great soul! And that of his son as well who honoured the will of his late father without any demand from the beneficiary (me) who had even no knowledge of the said will!
