Life story: Meenal Gupta, chess player

Meenal’s journey as a chess player started at the age of just nine years.

Jammu: Meenal Gupta, is prominent name as she brought laurels to Jammu and Kashmir by clinched several medals on national and international level in the game of Chess.

Meenal’s journey as a chess player started at the age of just nine years when most of don’t even know what chess is and in the last 5 years, she participated in more than 6 state, national and international level championships and won innumerable medals and appreciation.


“It was a very big platform for me indeed. I not only played my games but also got a chance to meet some of the world best chess player. I got a chance to have a conversation with them. I learnt a lot.”


“I hope those conversations help in becoming a better player and human being as well”, she added.


Meenal first of all thanked her father and specially.   She said, “It was my father’s dream to become an international chess player but somehow he wasn’t able to fulfill it and hence decided to realize it in me. He introduced me to chess. I being very young in age did not developed interest soon. But then one day, he made me participate in a national event where I saw so many people playing chess and then when I came back I started taking it seriously.”


“I practice on my laptop most of the times which means I am in competition with the sharpest brain in the world. I have to apply all my focus on the game and it is thrilling every single time. Trust me, there is not even a single moment in last 5 years when I have felt bored or never wanted to play more.”


“Also, chess has changed me totally as a person. It has taught me to focus on right things in life, take quick but correct decisions on my own and not to use my brain over petty things. I have learnt a lot and gained a lot of respect also and I owe everything to this game called Chess.”


Talking about the other aspects of her life, Meenal said that she studies in class 9th of KV School, Sunjwan. Her day starts with exercises and yoga in the morning which is followed by school and chess trainings in the evening. Her hobbies include watching comedy shows on T.V and listening to music. Like all the girls of her age she likes to hangout with her friends too but not at the cost of missing practice sessions. Her favourite chess player is Garry Kasparov of Russia.
