Last date for withdrawal of nominations for Nagaland & Meghalaya assembly elections ends today



Today is the last date for withdrawal of the nomination papers for the Assembly elections in Meghalaya and Nagaland. Both the states will go to the single-day poll on February 27 and the counting of votes will take place on March 3.

In Meghalaya, all together 377 nominations have been declared valid by the Election office out of 443 filed by the candidates for the 60-member Assembly.

As many as 100 companies of central forces are being deployed to maintain peace and order during the Assembly elections in the state.

Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkonger said that 20 companies have already arrived in the state and remaining 80 companies will reach after the Assembly elections in Tripura. He said that all security measures are being taken to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.

There will be a total of 3082 polling stations in the state. Out of which, 67 booths have been identified as critical and vulnerable and 546 polling stations as vulnerable.

In Nagaland, 256 candidates have filed their nominations. After the scrutiny, papers of 227 candidates, including 5 women, were found valid. while scrutiny of one candidate under Suruhoto Assembly Constituency which was adjourned will be given the final verdict today. Withdrawal of candidature will end at 3 pm today.

AIR correspondent reports, altogether 10 political parties including Independents will vie for the win.

The ruling Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) will contest the highest number of seats with 59, while the newly formed Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) will contest the second highest number of seats in 40 constituencies. The BJP in 20 seats having a pre-poll alliance with the NDPP.

The National People’s Party (NPP) and Janata Dal (United) follows right behind with 20 and 15 candidates respectively, while the rest will contest in few pockets of constituencies including 17 of the Independents.
