KU Kashmiri Department celebrates International Mother Language Day

Srinagar: The PG Department of Kashmiri, University of Kashmir organized a function to celebrate and commemorate International Mother Language Day Tuesday.

In her welcome address, the Head Department of Kashmiri Prof. Mehfooza Jan emphasized to promote Kashmiri Language and Literature by making it available to global audience through the medium of translation.

Dr. Sliafqat Altaf senior faculty at the Department of Kashmiri underscored the need to promote linguistic diversity and multi-linguistic across the nations.

Prof. Adil Amin Kak Dean School of Arts, Language & Literature emphasized the need to promote Kashmiri Language as a threat of extinction is looming over it in this globalised world.

Prof. Majrooh Rashid presented an optimistic vision about the survival of Kashmiri language. He further said that this language did not die even in the circumstances when it had no official patronage and support.

In his presidential address, Prof. Shafi Shauq highlighted the history and significance of International Mother Language day. He said multilingual education based on mother tongue could facilitate our access to inclusion in learning for population that speaks non dominant languages, language of minority and indigenous languages.

Two research scholars namely Oaeas Gulzar and Imtiyaz Ahmad presented thought provoking articles on the significance of mother tongue.

The proceedings of the event were carried out by Dr. Ashraf Ziya and he also presented vote of thanks.
