Kinnaur Avalanche: 5 Jawan Still Missing, Search Operation resumes

Shimla, Feb 22: Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and local police personnel began the rescue and search operation of five missing soldiers in an avalanche here after it remained suspended due to fresh avalanches and continuing snowfall in the region.
Earlier, six jawans of Jammu and Kashmir Rifle went missing. Among them, one Jawan’s body was recovered at Dagori post near Nambgai at Shipka La sector on India-China border in Kinnaur district on Thursday morning
Deputy Commissioner Kinnaur Mr Gopal Chand said that the rescue operation started this morning again and around 200 personnel have been deployed in the area.
The body of the soldier to be airlifted on Friday due to blocked roads.
A ceremony would also be organised on the same day for the martyr which would be attended by army officers and ADM and DSP from district administration.
The martyred jawan was identified as Havildar Rakesh Kumar, 41, who was from Jhandutta area of Bilaspur district in Himachal Pradesh.
The missing personnel are Naik Videsh Chand, Rifle men Govind Bhadur Chattri, Rfn Rajesh Risi, Rfn Arjun Kumar and Rfn Nitin Rana.
