Kashmir’s top winter destination Sonamarg needs tourist facilities, Mushtaq Chaya asks Govt

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir’s top hotelier and mentor of the PHDCCI Mushtaq Chaya has appealed the Government to upgrade winter facilties, particularly regular electricity supply, at famous hill station of Sonamarg.

Addressing a press conference at Srinagar, along with representatives of differnt tourism sectors, Chaya said Sonamarg is emerging as one of the most sought after winter destinations in Kashmir but lack of facilities could be a cause of inconvenience for the tourists.

He said electricity is one of the major issues when the temperature plummets below zero in winter months. “Over 5,000 workers are engaged in the hotel industry alone, while the traders and sumo operators together make a workforce of over 10,000”, said Chaya. He said private generators are merely support system on hour-to-hour basis and can not be an alternative for the regular grid power supply.

Chaya appealed the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Secretary A.K. Mehta for their personal interventon to upgrade facilities at Sonamarg.
