With 75 lakh liters milk production per day, J&K ranks among top states, UTs

 

Jammu: Entering into the milk revolution and figuring its name in among top Union Territories/States in the country, Jammu and Kashmir presently is producing 75 lakh litres of milk per day.

“Jammu and Kashmir is rapidly growing in the milk production sector and the production has increased manifold in the past few years,” an official said.

He added that in 2013-14, the milk production in Jammu and Kashmir was 1615 thousand metric tonnes and it increased to 2460 thousand metric tonnes in 2018-19.

“At present, Jammu and Kashmir is producing 75 lakh liters of milk per day,” he added.

He further said that in view of the step taken under which the practice of dairy was started in Jammu and Kashmir, the program of breed improvement has progressed.

“In the next 4 years there will be a revolution in the field of milk production in Jammu and Kashmir,” he added and said that Jammu and Kashmir will soon make its name into the list of large quantities of milk producing states.

However, he said, “at present we are getting 664300 quintals of milk from outside states every year. But this import will see a decline in the coming years”.

Dairy Development Scheme is becoming very popular among the people in Jammu and Kashmir and under this rural youth have shown interest in setting up new dairies.

“At the same time the program of breed improvement has gained momentum,” he added.

From 2013-14 to 2017-18, an official said that breed improvement of 42,44,000 cattle has been done by artificial ingestion.

“On average milk per capita is much better in Jammu and Kashmir. In the last few years, a lot of work has been done in the animal husbandry sector,” he said and added that the trend of farmers has increased towards dairy through various schemes introduced by the Central Government and the dairy sector in Jammu and Kashmir is strengthening each passing day.

Meanwhile a dairy owner suggested that the government should work towards increasing the production of cattle feed and making it affordable to all.
