After de-throning and arrest of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in August 1953, Prime Minister Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad had a popularity challenge. Besides populist governance policies, he would organise several cultural and sports events to keep people engaged. Jashn-e-Kashmir was once such series. This photograph by Howard Scheruk for the Life magazine was taken during the Jashn-e-Kashmir festival in late October 1953. This was a musical festival in the backdrop of Martand Sun Temple
