JAMMU: In a major success and respite to the citizens, Jammu Police arrested a gang of local as well as inter-state chain snatchers and recovered snatched gold chains from the accused.

These snatchers were particularly targeting elderly and lone women especially at isolated places.

“Chain snatching incidents took place in Jammu city in the last few days at Sainik Colony, Greater Kailash, Gangayal, Satwari and Trikuta Nagar area. Complaints followed by FIRs were lodged at different Police stations of Jammu,” SSP Jammu Chandan Kohli said.

These snatchers were targeting old age and lone travelling women. With the help of CCTVs Police was able to lay their hands on the images of snatchers as well as their motor cycle which they were using for commission of crime, the SSP said.

He further added that police teams of PS Bahu Fort, Channi, Gangayal and Satwari under the supervision of SP South Shaheen Wahid assisted by SDPO East Prupkar Singh, were assigned different tasks like collecting CCTV footages tracking the culprits, follow their movement pattern, understanding their modus operandi and to identify and catch the accused.

For over two days, the diligent cops of Jammu police under the supervision of SP South Shaheen Wahid, continuously worked tirelessly, to catch hold of these snatchers.

The case was peculiar because unlike a stolen vehicle that could be caught hold of at a police naka, or a stolen mobile phone, which can be tracked via technology, a chain is a tiny item, and once stolen, is very difficult to recover, officials said.

However, under the supervision of SP South Shaheen Wahid, the police was able to catch two snatchers, when they attempted another snatching bid in Trikuta Nagar on Thursday, they said.

The duo have been identified as Ram Sevak son of Beedal and Dharmendra @Ravi son of Mannu, both residents of Shamli of UP, said the SSP.

“During investigation it came to fore that both were involved in multiple incidents of snatching in District Jammu. They were also involved in similar such incidents in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. Their modus operandi was that they used to pose as Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Pilgrims to avoid suspicion. 6 stolen Gold chains and a stolen bike were also recovered from their possession,” he said.

Officials said that today two more suspects namely Akash Khushu @ Lalla and Rahul Rawal, both residents of Durga Nagar Jammu were rounded up in case FIR No. 87/2023 U/S 382 IPC of P/S Janipur who were also involved in chain snatching.

These accused were involved in multiple chain snatching in Roop Nagar, Canal Road , Sarwal and Paloura area.

The accused were arrested by the team constituted by the special team constituted under the supervision of SP North Kulbir Handa assisted by SDPO West Vikram Singh and SHO PS Janipur Inspr Sikander Singh.

During investigation, accused  confessed and disclosed that they had snatched 05 gold chains from different locations of Jammu District using Motor cycle KTM Duke bearing Registration No. JK02 DC 8234 and have sold to  Muthoot Finance Branch Talab Tillo, Jammu. The snatched chains shall be recovered from the finance company and they shall be liable for the criminal offence.
