J&K student dies in Punjab; JKSA seeks probe into incident

Urged Punjab CM to constitute a team to probe the mysterious death of student

PUNJAB: The Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association on Monday demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the mysterious death of a Jammu and Kashmir student Zeeshan Ahmad, a BAMS Student at Desh Bhagat University in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab.

In a statement issued, the National spokesperson of the association, Adil Bhat, stated, “Chief Patron of Association Nasir Khuehami has already contacted the authorities in Punjab and has spoken to the Chief Minister’s Media Advisor Baltej Pannu and brought the matter into his notice.”

The unfortunate incident involved the student allegedly committing suicide by jumping from a building. Promptly responding to the tragedy, the J&K Student Association reached out to university officials to gain insights into the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, the deceased student’s father came forward with distressing allegations of harassment faced by his son at the hands of the university.

“Quoting the deceased father, he alleged that my son was harassed by the University administration, who imposed a hefty fine on him, causing him to fall into depression, eventually leading to his untimely suicide. An FIR has been lodged, pressing charges of murder and harassment, emphasizing the need for an unbiased investigation to ensure justice for my son. The University administration’s failure to provide any medical assistance or ambulance during the incident only added to the tragedy, leaving me with an irreparable loss. I strongly believe that the University administration bears responsibility for this devastating outcome. Speaking to the media inside the University premises, the father expressed his grief and demanded accountability for the circumstances that led to the loss of his son’s life.”

In response to the incident, the University Authorities informed the Association that a three-member investigation panel has been constituted to look into the student’s suicide thoroughly. The panel will submit its unbiased report within two days, ensuring a proper investigation. The university fully supports the family and is ready to provide services and cooperation during this tragic time.

Umar Jamal, the National General Secretary of the Association, stressed the need for a fair investigation and requested the authorities’ intervention to ensure that the probe reaches a logical conclusion. The Association Chief Patron Nasir Khuehami received assurances of assistance from the Chief Minister’s Media Advisor, who promised to provide all necessary support to expedite the investigation.

The Association also appealed to Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mann, to constitute a team to probe the mysterious death of the Jammu and Kashmir student. As we mourn the loss of a young life, it is crucial that we address the broader issue of student mental health and create a safe and supportive environment for all students, especially those hailing from distant regions like Jammu and Kashmir. The welfare of students should always remain at the forefront of the education system, Jamaal added.

In their plea for cooperation, the Association urged the University and other authorities to take necessary actions to prevent such tragic incidents in the future and secure the welfare of all students. Association stand with the bereaved family during this difficult time and hope that justice will prevail. The Association has also appealed to the central government to take necessary measures to ensure foolproof security for Kashmiri students across various states in the country. The Association believes that it is crucial to safeguard Kashmiri students from any form of harassment or mistreatment.
