Is ‘Shri Krishna Institute’ the new name for Srinagar’s SKIMS?

Jammu: Amid the ‘naming and renaming spree’ all across Jammu and Kashmir, an official document mentioning the wrong name of Srinagar’s prestigious medical institute triggered quite a row, online.

A document on the website of the National Health Mission (NHM) giving out details of support for the hepatitis programme was first spotted by Srinagar based veteran Yusuf Jameel. The document mentioned “Sri Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences” instead of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences. Jameel’s tweet was shared over 60 times by the afternoon.

The image was soon viral with hundreds of social media users posting it on Facebook, Twitter and sharing it in WhatsApp groups.

Jameel, however, pursued this question with Yasin Choudhary, Director, National Health Mission, Jammu and Kashmir. Choudhary checked and confirmed back that the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has not been renamed.

“The erroneous document has been taken down. There was a clerical error at the Ministry’s end that entailed the wrong full form in the ppt. Request everyone to please don’t assume any unjustified notions”, Choudhary wrote in response to Jameel’s question.

It may be mentioned here that while a number of institutions, buildings and roads have recently been named after notable personalities, there is the demand by several Dogra and Pandit groups to drop Sheikh Abdullah’s name from institutes and other buildings. Last year, the government dropped Sheikh’s name from Srinagar’s international convention center. The government sources said that there were no plans of renaming the SKIMS.
