India records 60,471 new COVID-19 cases, lowest in 75 days; 2,726 deaths reported in 24 hours

India on Tuesday, reported 60,471 new COVID19 cases, the lowest after 75 days. 1,17,525 people have been discharged so far. 2,726 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry. With this, the total number of cases in the country stands at 2,95,70,881. 2,82,80,472 people have been discharged so far. The overall death toll in the country stands at 3,77,031. The number of active cases is 9,13,378.

According to the Union Health Ministry, 25,90,44,072 people have been vaccinated so far. “Recovery rate increases to 95.64%, Weekly Positivity Rate drops to less than 5%, currently at 4.39%. Daily positivity rate at 3.45%, less than 5% for 8 consecutive days,” the Ministry of Health said.

Meanwhile, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 38,13,75,984 samples have been tested for COVID-19, up to June 14. Of these, 17,51,358 samples were tested on Monday, the ICMR said.

According to the Johns Hopkins University Centre, India is now the second worst-affected country in the world after the US, which has recorded over 3.34 crore cases of COVID-19. Brazil is a distant third with 1.74 crore cases.

While many states have partially eased the restrictions and allowed the opening of malls, shops and restaurants with strict COVID-19 protocols, experts have not yet ruled out the possibility of a third wave of the deadly pandemic. The government is, however, confident that India’s entire population will be vaccinated by December 2021, and thus, would be in a better position to handle the next wave.

According to the Health Ministry, India’s cumulative vaccination count stands at 25,87,13,321. “Cumulatively, 4,34,35,032 persons across 37 States/UTs have received their first dose and total 8,33,808 have received their second dose since the start of Phase-3 of the vaccination drive,” the ministry said.
