On 14 February 2019, over 40 Indian police force soldiers were killed in one of the worst terrorist attacks on military targets in Kashmir in the past two decades. The Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad claimed responsibility for the attack. Less than two weeks later, India claimed it launched air strikes on Jaish camps in Balakot, Pakistan.
