Kupwara: Students of Government Upper Primary School Gujjernar Rangpath, Qaziabad, in district Kupwara, today staged a protest against Department of Education, alleging non-availability of teachers and proper infrastructure.
“The school building was damaged in 2016 in a landslide and the students were shifted to another location, which is very far from their houses, to carry on with their studies. We live in constant fear that on their way to school, the students can have an encounter with wild animals. As such, the number of students who go to school, daily, is very less,” a resident said.
“In a makeshift arrangement, the students study in other school buildings taken on rent. Also, it is within 300 yards of their residential area. The repair or demolition of the original building has been proposed to the department, until then, students will have to continue to study in the same arrangement,” says the official.
The official claimed, “Till date, everything was fine. Students were going to school without any problem. I don’t know, what has happened suddenly and why have they taken to protest. If we start classes in the original building, which had just 3 rooms, they will cry for less accommodation.”
The students and their parents demanded repair of the original school building, and enough teaching staff.
“In these 3 years, we have approached almost all the concerned authorities for the matter, but to no avail,” they said. The parents of the students, from Scheduled Tribe community, alleged injustice and official apathy.
