SRINAGAR: In Jammu and Kashmir, student enrolment has taken a dip of nearly two per cent at all levels in the government-run schools as compared to the previous academic years.

The Government of India (GoI) in a project approval board meeting has said that the highest dip was witnessed in the elementary and secondary level schools.

“Enrolment at elementary as well as at secondary and higher secondary level has decreased by 0.2 lakh at Primary level, 0.1 lakh at Upper Primary level that resulted in a decrease of 0.34 lakh enrolment at Elementary level,” MoE said

The Ministry of Education (MoE) in the meeting has also said that the decreased level of students at secondary level was 0.07 Lakh and 0.04 lakh at higher secondary level.

Besides, the MoE has said that the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir does not have a separate cadre for teacher education.

“As such the adjustment of posts in District Institute of Education and Trainings (DIETs) is done by way of inter-transferring of Joint Directors, Chief Educational Officers (CEOs), principals, lecturers from School Education to Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) and vice-versa for tenure of two years,” MoE said.

It also said that the frequent inter department movement of academicians from one position to another and then back, has not facilitated the creation of a permanent and professional pool of Teacher Educators in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Therefore, DIETs need to be provided with experienced lecturers, teachers with minimum qualification of master’s degree with B.ed in order to enhance the quality of education,” MoE said—(KNO)
