Normal life was affected in Manipur today by the 48-hour statewide general strike which began at midnight last night. The strike has been called by the Manipur University Students’ Union demanding removal of Professor AP Pandey from the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University.

The student body has labelled certain allegations against the Vice-Chancellor, including financial irregularities. In state capital Imphal, inter-state and inter-district vehicular services remained off the roads due to the strike. Business establishments, including shops and markets, remained closed.

The Union HRD Ministry has re-constituted the Fact Finding Committee to probe the allegations labelled against the Professor. The committee will now be headed by the former Acting Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court T. Nandakumar Singh. It will submit a report within a month after conducting field visits and discussions with all stakeholders.
Professor Pandey will be on leave during the course of inquiry.
