GDC Bhaderwah organises a webinar on “International Biological Diversity Day”

JAMMU: Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with Eco Club, Govt. Degree College, Bhaderwah organised a webinar on the topic _“Biodiversity of Chenab Basin”_ to commemorate “International Biological Diversity-2022 in order to raise awareness about the life forms facing threat of extinction.
The theme for this years’ International Biological Diversity Day was “Building a Shared Future for all Life”.
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Sharma, Principal GDC Bhaderwah was the Chief Guest on the occasion while Dr. Suresh Rana, Scientist, G.B Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Ladakh Regional Centre, Leh was the eminent speaker and Prof. Anuradha Sharma, Head and convenor Eco Club was the Convener and moderator for the Programme.
The webinar began with the welcome address and keynote remarks by Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Sharma, Principal GDC Bhaderwah.
Speaking on the occasion, he talked about biodiversity and how different living organisms coexist to form a web of life, bringing oxygen, water and other benefits to humans.
Prof. Anuradha Sharma apprised the participants about the broad contours of the programme apart from various aspects of Biodiversity, key challenges and way forward.
Dr. Suresh Rana, Scientist G.B Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment gave a power point presentation on Biodiversity of Chenab Basin. He explained the landscape of Chenab Basin and resultant unique Himalayan biodiversity in the region. He talked about the major forest types, mammals, birds, medicinal plants, butterfly and other taxonomic groups of Chenab valley region.
 “There are about 21 mammal species, about 250 species of birds, more than 1000 species of trees etc. found in Chenab basin,” he commented while stressing further on taking concrete conservational steps to stop and arrest the dwindling biodiversity in Chenab region and sought a collective effort in this direction from all stake holders including students.
Later, Jaseeb Ahmed, a student of Semester II also shared his ideas on biodiversity as to how humans have impacted it on earth by their greedy actions.
The webinar was attended by faculty members, academicians and students of GDC Bhaderwah.
At the end, a formal vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Jaideep Kumar, Asstt. Prof. in Zoology, who thanked keynote speaker and all other participants for sharing their valuable thoughts  in the programme.
