Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will address a press conference at 3 pm today. The Centre is likely to announce some relief measures for the sectors severely affected by the second wave of coronavirus pandemic, according to reports.
In an exclusive interview, earlier this month, with Times Network Group Editor (Politics) Navika Kumar, the FM talked extensively about how the government has dealt with the Covid-19 second wave and what it is doing in terms of economic revival and vaccination.
Commenting on how the pandemic has challenged the government, Sitharaman said: “These are certainly challenging times globally for any finance minister. Covid second wave was recognised for its intensity, scale and rapidity. Not sure any country could have been prepared for the Covid second wave. Nobody could have predicted the intensity of this pandemic.”
The second wave of coronavirus pandemic has severely hit the country. With several states announcing local lockdowns to prevent the virus spread, the recovery process from the devastating impact of the first wave of COVID-19 has become difficult for many — especially for the tourism, hospitality sector, and MSMEs.
