EC announces by-polls for 3 seats of Rajya Sabha

The Election Commission today announced by-polls for three seats of Rajya Sabha. Election for two seats of Rajya Sabha in Gujarat will be held which is vacant due to the death of BJP’s Abhay Bharadwaj and Congress’s Ahmed Patel. Election for one seat in Assam will be held which is vacant due to resignation of BPF’s Biswajit Daimary.
 
Notification for the polls will be issued on the 11th of this month and polling will be held on 1st March.
 
The Election Commission has asked all concerned to follow broad COVID-19 guidelines of the State Government and Home Ministry.
 
The Commission has directed Chief Secretaries of Gujarat and Assam to depute a senior officer each from the State to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the bye-polls.
 
The Commission has also appointed the Chief Electoral Officers of Gujarat and Assam as Observer for the elections.
