In Canada, the number of deaths due to a heat wave in Quebec has reached 70. Previously, the toll was 54 dead.

A health ministry official said thirty-four of the fatalities were recorded in Montreal. The heat wave hit eastern Canada early this month but only Quebec has recorded a rise in deaths.

In 2010, around 100 people in the Montreal area died because of stifling heat.
