Jammu: Half of the adult population of Jammu and Kashmir has been fully vaccinated with anti-Covid jabs in the Union Territory so far.
As per official figures till that 53% of population above the age group of 18 and above have been fully vaccinated. In total 1,43, 83,512 doses have been administered to eligible citizens in the J&K so far including 94,93,657 first doses, while 48, 89, 855 adult souls have been fully vaccinated in the entire UT.
According to the 2011 census, J&K’s population is 12.5 million. In J&K the vaccination drive was rolled out on January 16 with health care workers (HCWs) getting inoculated in the first phase. The vaccination of frontline workers (FLWs) started from February 2. The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination commenced from March 1 for people over 60 years of age and those aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions. The UT launched vaccination for all people aged over 45 years from April 1. The government then decided to expand its vaccination drive by allowing all above 18 to be vaccinated from June 1. When the vaccination drive started in Kashmir, rumors and hesitancy among the people were the main obstacles. From roping in influencers, prominent doctors and religious leaders, authorities used all possible ways to remove vaccine hesitancy. Instead of waiting for people to vaccine centres, healthcare workers started a door-to-door vaccination drive which helped achieve desired results.
Highest 66% adult population has been fully vaccinated in Ramban district followed by 60% in Poonch, 57% each in Srinagar, Baramulla and Ganderbal districts. Kishtwar with 43% is lagging behind while, Kulgam, Kupwara, Doda and Rajouri have vaccinated 48% of its adult population so far. 77, 96,129 doses in the age group of 18to44 age group, 42,29,251 doses in age group of 45 to 60 and 23,63,681 above the age group of 60 years have received jabs so far.
Highest 17, 67,500 doses have been administered in the winter capital of Jammu district with 11,66,346 first doses and 6,01,154 have been fully vaccinated with 52% coverage.
On October 14, UT achieved 100 per cent coverage of the first dose of COVID-19 vaccines for the age group of 18 years and above.
The UT has witnessed 4,431 deaths since the pandemic began last March. From the peak of more than 50,000 active cases in mid-May, cases have come down to 838 as of October 27.
