Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu today said the combined efforts to improve productivity, strengthen allied sectors and better market interventions like e-nam will help doubling farmers’ income by 2022.
He was interacting with Agriculture researchers of ICAR working in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in Hyderabad today. Quoting a study by MANAGE he stressed on the need for strengthening back-yard poultry and diary and also allied sectors to prevent distress situations for farming community.
He further said ensuring remunerative price for farm produce should be on top of the agenda to achieve the target of doubling farmers’ income. He also asked scientists to ensure research should reach farms fast and acquire state of the art technology. Considering the changing health and food scenario of people, he asked scientist to focus on increasing production of millets and create awareness about them among people.
Earlier, DG ICAR Dr Trilochan Mohapatra said over 250 high yield varieties have been developed during the past decade and India has become surplus food grain nation from a deficit state 50 years ago. He also said biofortified varieties also have been developed through which thr country can address malnutrition issues.
